The living legend of asian music - Runa Laila



Born in Sylhet, East Pakistan (now in Bangladesh), in 1952, Runa Laila did playbacks for movies in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan during late 60s, 70s, and the early 80's.
Runa Laila made an exciting debut in Hindi films in the early 70s and then worked with many renowned music directors such as Jaidev, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Bappi Lahiri. Her most famous Hindi film songs included “Do Dewaane Shehar Mein”, "Tumhe Ho Na Ho" (Gharonda) and 'Main Kali Anaar Ki' (Sapnon ka Mandir). Her best known number is ‘Dama Dam Mast Kalandar’. Music lovers all over India were swinging to the rhythmic beat of "Dama Dam Mast Kalandar”.
Runa Laila was an over-night hit when she made a sensational entry into the Hindi filmdom with her "Ek Se Badkar Ek" which she sang for the film 'Ek Se Badkar Ek' (1976) under the baton of Kalyanji Anandji. Her songs " Do Diwane Shahar Mein" and "Tumhe Ho Na Ho Mujhko To Itna Yakin Hai" in 'Gharonda', which was released later in 1977, also went down very well with Indian audience.


After that she withdrew from Bombay, but still remained popular in the south Asian country. She has since made occasional forays to India to make albums, all of which turned out to be best-sellers. Her toe-tapping 'Superuna', which she cut for EMI Music Company along with Bappi Lahiri in 1982, has won her gold and platinum discs. She recorded 'Loves of Runa Laila', with celebrated film music director of Pakistan Nayyar which has gone double platinum. She has recorded in some more Hindi films since including 'Jaane-Bahaar', 'Sapnon Ka Mandir', 'Yaadgaar' and the Amitabh Bachchan starred "Agnee Path".
Till now Runa Laila has rendered about 10,000 songs. She can render songs in 18 languages which is really outstanding for any singer in the world.
