Wishing the 'Kashmir Ki Kali' of Bollywood - Sharmila Tagore a very happy birthday.



Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore turned 73 today, and the yesteryear actress still manages to charm her fans with her beauty and persona.



No actress combines the best of the East and the West so fluently in her personality.
The gorgeous actress made her acting debut with Satyajit Ray's Bengali film ‘Apur Sansar' in 1959 and then gradually achieved new heights of stardom. Sharmila began her Bollywood career in ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ in 1964. After that she give another hit movie ‘An Evening in Paris’ in 1967 opposite to Shammi Kapoor. 



Sharmila and Rajesh Khanna pair gave six box office hits including the likes – ‘Aradhana’, ‘Safar’, ‘Amar Prem’, ‘Chhoti Bahu’, ‘Daag’ and ‘Avishkaar’. Sharmila has appeared in 58 Hindi movies and 10 Bengali movies and one each of English, Marathi and Malyalam.

At a time when women were cast in secondary characters, Tagore achieved a rare combination of commercial and critical success with films like Tapan Sinha's ‘Nirjan Saikate', Hrishikesh Mukherjee's ‘Anupama' or Shakti Samanta's ‘Kashmir Ki Kali.'
A master at the art of adaptation, Sharmila Tagore plays the many roles in her life - actor, aristocrat, parent, censor, cognoscente, goodwill ambassador with effortless élan.



The actress has led the Indian Film Censor Board from October 2004 till March 2011. In December 2005 she was chosen as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 2013, she was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.



Sharmila married former captain of the Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan on 27th December 1969. She converted herself into Islam and took on the name Ayesha Sultana. They had three children Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan. Saba is a jewellery designer and Saif and Soha are Bollywood stars.

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi died, at age 70, on 22 September 2011. The actress was seen clam and composed throughout the phase of deep sorrow.



Being an icon for over four decades, Sharmila Tagore continues to sprinkle her charm even today as she enters into 73rd year of her life. Sharmila shattered stereotypes in Indian cinema and still continues to make heads turn in her public appearance with her presence and beauty.

Sharmila was but a 15-year-old schoolgirl when she first appeared on the big screen in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film, Apur Sansar, in 1961, the third and final part of his fabled Apu trilogy. The film marked the beginning of a glorious career that extended for almost five decades.

No other Hindi filmmaker quite tapped into Sharmila Tagore’s talent like Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The master director cast her in his three films - Anupama (1966), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Satyakam (1969) and her performance was much loved and appreciated by the audience.

Speaking about her association with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the actress said “It was indeed a pleasure working with him in quite a few films. The way he made his films appealed to a broader section of the audience and surely everyone loved him”.
