Tributes to O P Nayyar, the creator of some of the most scintillating tunes in bollywood, on his 11th death anniversary today.

28th January marks the 11th death anniversary of maestro par excellence O P Nayyar.

 A composer with a distinctive style whose work was always original, O P Nayyar enthralled generations of music lovers with his lilting romantic numbers featuring a distinctive sound created by the innovative use of the piano, saxophone and rhythms.
Over 50 years and with nearly 73 films, Nayyar established himself as a master of rhythm with chart-busting songs from films like Aar Paar (1954), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) and Howrah Bridge (1958).

The legendary songsmith had no formal training in music, yet he composed unforgettable tunes in the 1950s and 1960s and became one of the highest paid composers of his time.

 The creator of all-time evergreen hits such as "Mera Nam Chin Chin Choo," "Leke Pehla Pehla Pyar", "Aei Dil Hai Muskil Jeena Yahan", "Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein", "Deewana Hua Baadal", "Maang Ke Saath Tumhara", "Yeh chand so roshan chehra", "Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana," "Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Jee", "Babuji Dheere Chalna", "Chain Se Humko Kabhi ", "Pukarta chala hoon main", "Phir Miloge Kabhi" and "Aap Yuhin Agar Humse Milte Rahen," passed away on 28th January, 2007 leaving behind only his timeless music for us to cherish.

Music composer Omkar Prasad Nayyar was that one rare bird in Hindi film music scene. He reached the pinnacle of Hindi cinema, becoming one of the highest paid composers, without ever working with the queen of the music industry, Lata Mangeshkar. Instead, he groomed her younger sister, Asha Bhosle and got her to sing most of his songs.

Asha Bhosle sang 324 songs for Nayyar, many of which were instrumental in carving her own niche and identity separate to her sister’s. In an online interview, Nayyar said, “Asha also had certain vocal abilities that Lata or even Shamshad never had. I gave my best composing for Asha and she gave her all singing for me.”

 His melodies will always remain immortal.

Shahzad Khalil began his career as a director producing music videos in 1970, and then moved to making television drama serials. After a few projects he moved from PTV in Lahore to its Karachi Center. The Government of Pakistan gave Khali the Pride of Performance Award in 1986 and named a Karachi street after him.
