Remembering Shashi Kapoor (18 March 1938 - 4 December 2017)


With those copybook good looks and that rakish smile, he was the stuff of teen crushes that evolved into wistful nostalgia as the years rolled by. Shashi Kapoor, 79, when he passed away in Mumbai after a prolonged illness today, will be remembered for his many commercial films, his commitment to quality cinema when he turned filmmaker but also as the man who embodied ageless elegance.

A charismatic actor, he charmed the audience with his good looks and flamboyant dancing style in mainstream films while also nurturing alternative cinema and theatre.


Shashi, youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, made his debut as a child actor in Raj Kapoor's Aag (1948) and also featured in Awara (1951). He made his debut as a lead actor in Yash Chopra's Dharmputra (1961) and went on to act in over 100 films, including some classics like Waqt (1965), Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965) and Sharmeelee (1971).

The actor formed a formidable partnership with Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s and early 1980s, starring in films like Deewaar (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978), Kaala Patthar (1979) and Namak Halaal (1982), among others.

Shashi Kapoor was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2011 and the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2015.

He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Deewaar (1975). He won two Filmfare Best Movie Awards for his work as producer and star of Junoon (1979) and Kalyug (1981). In 2010, Shashi was presented with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shashi Kapoor did 61 solo lead hero films in Hindi and, of them, 35 were super-hits. Shashi did 55 multi-star cast movies where Shashi was one of the lead heroes and, of them, 33 were super-hits, 20 were flops, 2 remain unreleased.

He directed Amitabh Bachchan in Ajooba and also a Russian film called Vozvrashcheniye Bagdadskogo Vora, and also produced major hits like Junoon, Kalyug, Vijeta and Utsav.

Apart from national and international cinema, the late actor was also known for his work as a theatre artist.

He was married to Anglo-Indian actor Jennifer Kendal and is survived by his sons Karan and Kunal and daughter Sanjana Kapoor.

Shashi Kapoor and his wife Jennifer Kendal were instrumental in establishing and nurturing the iconic Prithvi theatre in Mumbai. The actor lost Jennifer to cancer in 1984.


Shashi Kapoor was 2nd highest paid Hindi actor,sharing the spot with Devanand from 1970-75 and 3rd third highest paid Hindi actor, sharing space with Vinod Khanna from 1976-82.The highest paid Indian actor was Rajesh Khanna from 1970-1987.



His personal favorite Kishore Asha duet songs are Kahiye Kahase Ana Hua from Heeralal Pannalal, Hey Mujhe Dil Dey Nahi Toh Sunle and Yahan Nahi Kahungi from Mr. Romeo, Kahan Kahan Kis Kis Din from Chakkar Pe Chakkar and Kahe Ko Kahe Ko Mere Peeche Padi Hai from Chori Mera Kaam.His favorite Kishore Lata duet are Sa Re Ga Ma from Abhinetri, Na Soenge Na Sone Denge from Mr.KarRomeo, Wada o from Aa Gale Lag Ja, Aaj Madhosh Hua from Sharmilee ,Kaash Aisa Hota from Aahuti, Pyar Jab Tera Mera Hua from Deewangee. Jaane Mujhe Tune Yeh Kya Cheez from Naina(1973) is his most favorite Shardha Kishore duet.
